The making of Angie’s Collection

The making of Angie Smith's collection

When it comes to effortless style and thoughtful design, few do it quite like Angie. A creative force and long-time friend of THE UPSIDE, she brings a sense of ease, warmth, and authenticity to everything she does. So when the chance to co-create a collection came along, it wasn’t just a collaboration, it was a meaningful meeting of minds.

Inspired by the rhythm of her every day, this collection is rooted in real life. Pieces that feel as good as they look. Versatile, comfortable, and quietly confident, they’re designed to carry you through it all, from the school run to weekends away.

In her own words, Angie shares the heart behind the collection, and why it means so much to her.

"I’m beyond excited—and really proud—to have had the opportunity to create a collection of pieces that feel like me.

They’re exactly what I want to wear day in, day out. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that I’ve worked with THE UPSIDE team for the last few years, and every time a new lookbook lands in my inbox, I get that same feeling of excitement, knowing I’ll want to live in the pieces. Their designs are always effortless—comfortable, cool, and made to slot seamlessly into real life.

I began the design process by looking at my own wardrobe—the pieces I reach for on repeat. The daycare drop, grocery runs, a morning class, afternoons at the park or pool with my son, working from home, catching up with friends for dinner, weekends away, airport looks, and everything in between. I wanted to create pieces that could move effortlessly through all of those moments—things you can throw on without a second thought and feel good in, wherever you’re headed."

"I wrote a list of all the pieces I reach for time and time again—an oversized shirt, track pants, my favourite ’90s tee, a long wrap skirt… and then thought about how to get the most out of them. When I’m packing for a trip, I always try to stick to a bit of a colour theme. I find that once I’ve worn all my favourite outfits, I can still mix and match the same pieces in different ways without having to think too much about whether they go together—because they just do. And somehow, I end up with more outfit options, all of which feel considered but still easy (this bit’s key).

I’ve never believed that getting dressed should be a stressful event—but I’ve been there. I still remember my first job at a magazine and the daily anxiety of figuring out what to wear, second-guessing every outfit. When I went freelance, it felt like a weight had lifted. Suddenly, I could just wear what I loved, and if that meant repeating an outfit formula that made me feel good, then so be it. It freed me up to focus on my day without overthinking what I was wearing.

I’ve carried this mindset into my freelance career, too. As a stylist, my role is to take the decision-making out of the clients hands—whether they’re walking a red carpet, appearing on TV, or heading to an event. My job is to make them feel like the best version of themselves, so they can put their energy into what they’re doing rather than worrying about what they’re wearing. When an outfit works, it should feel effortless.I remember an actress once asking me if I could make her feel like she’d spent the day at the beach and still had salt on her skin, sand in her hair and had just rolled onto the red carpet, I hope this collection makes you feel like like the best version of yourself and take you to where you want to be."
